Summer Groove

The title implies certain irreverence, and it lies, as usual, in the colourful grouping of art and artists that composes our summer edition.

Opening with the powerful, riveting art of Brazilian-born artist, residing in England, Ana Maria Pacheco, we gently segue to a major retrospective of Victoria’s most prolific painter, James Gordaneer, whose work was influenced by many international art movements from Modern Abstraction and Surrealism to Neo Expressionism. Several museum exhibitions called for a look, including the National Gallery’s re-visiting of the Pop Life, and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ presentation of art and music inspired by Miles Davis. Quebec printmaker, Lisa Tognon, has filled the gallery space of the Maison des arts de Laval with a retrospective of her work covering the last few years and incorporating several series in which the artist pushes the envelope of this demanding medium. Ryan Trecartin, called “the darling” of the American contemporary art scene, is a young filmmaker whose visual expression Julie Oakes found irresistible. In lieu of our regular east coast contributor, John K. Grande covered the abstract universe of Christan McLeod in Halifax. And a real treat: a look at the always contemporary work of octogenarian, and one of Quebec’s best known artists, Françoise Sullivan.

Ah, Montréal, mon amour. This is a city that continues to move me. Its unbeatable spirit of art, its indomitable artists… With summer came such an avalanche of super shows, I would need a separate edition just for them. As it is, what we have chosen is but a cross-section, a morsel, a tease… reviews of Khosro Berahmandi’s paintings, intricate like Persian miniatures; David Moore’s powerful sculptural installation; urban photographs through the eyes of Amel Chamandy; and the exuberance and joy of Costa Dvorezky’s large canvases, that in themselves embody the spirit of summer. Let’s not waste one moment of it…
